It allows for an enriched gathering of factual information, and presents the opportunity for better distribution of those facts for public attention. Especially since the spreading of news is now no longer solely in the hands of a select few. 

Such exciting technical phenomenon has opened up a whole new realm for those engaged in independent journalism, by enabling much improved scrutiny and enhancing the capacity to challenge the accountability of the powerful.
